When I was a little girl, I was always intrigued by the story of Hansel and Gretel. I always tried to imagine the types of things they found to eat when they stumbled upon the Witch’s gingerbread house. I envisioned a large, chocolate, Black Forest cake sitting on a graham cracker table with licorice legs. Yum!

Now granted, in my fantasy, the witch wasn’t a witch at all, but rather a sweet little old lady who simply enjoyed making goodies for kids who were out wandering in the deep, dark forest. She would make me Black Forest Cakes all day long and I’d eat them without gaining a pound or getting sick. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? LOL! Now, I make my own Black Forest Cake following this simple recipe, and even though it may make me gain a few pounds if I overindulge, I still eat it anyway.

A couple of weeks ago I organized a special dinner for 5 people. The guests were some of our closest friends and one of them had a birthday coming up, so I wanted to serve something extra delicious for dessert.

At first, I thought of making a bunch of cupcakes with frosting and pretty decorations. But then I came across this cake recipe and I just couldn’t resist trying it! Creamy whipped frosting sandwiched between rich chocolate, make this deliciously decadent dessert irresistible. The topping really brings the whole dish together wonderfully.

This cake is also perfect for those who would like to make their dessert ahead! After removing from cake pans, wrap them in foil and pop them into the freezer until ready to fill and frost. This will help keep the cake moist, as well as prevent crumbs from getting into the frosting.

Then just thaw the cake, make the frosting and you’re done. How easy is that?

Need a cake for a special occasion? This Black Forest Cake perfect for a festive event, but don’t be too modest to make this just to surprise your family!  This cake is super-moist, loaded with great chocolate flavor, and topped with about the most light and heavenly whipped cream frosting imaginable. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it?

I don’t bake cakes often, but when I do, I like to pull out all the stops and put together something out-of-this-world to wow my guests.  If you are going to bake something nice for company, you might as well go all-out, am I right?  If you’re not that into chocolate or cherries, this may not be the cake for you, but if you are, you’ll fall in love with it.
