Are you looking to sweeten up your dinner a little bit? If so, give this Hawaiian chicken a try. It sports the flavors of the Big Island and totally tickles your taste buds. My family really enjoyed these sweet chicken thighs. They are smothered in brown sugar, soy sauce, and all sorts of yummy ingredients. I served the chicken with rice and pineapple chunks. Talk about a delish dish! I know your family will love this tasty meal just as much as mine does. Enjoy!

Check out what my pals over at Chew Out Loud had to say about this recipe:

If there’s one grilled chicken to try, it’s Hawaiian Huli Huli Chicken. “Huli-huli” means “turn-turn” and was well known as a “Hawaiian-only” food. Not anymore ’cause the secret’s out. Make this tender, mouthwatering chicken easily at home.

I never knew that is what huli huli meant! This chicken definitely turns heads 🙂

INGREDIENTS

3 lbs Perdue boneless/skinless chicken breasts or thighs (thighs will be a bit more tender)

½ cup packed Domino brown sugar

½ cup Heinz ketchup

½ cup regular Kikkoman soy sauce

¼ cup sherry

2 tsp fresh ginger, minced

4 cloves garlic, minced

¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper

Optional: green onions, sliced thinly for garnish over cooked chicken

Instructions

Towel dry the chicken pieces well. Use a fork to pierce chicken pieces throughout.

In a bowl, combine all remaining ingredients to make the marinade. Reserve ⅔ cup of marinade for a basting sauce. Pour rest of marinade over towel dried/pierced chicken pieces in a large bowl, turning chicken to thoroughly coat well. Cover and chill overnight, or at least 8 hours. Turn once or twice during marinade time to ensure even marinating.

Drain/discard used marinade from chicken pieces. Grease grill and heat to medium-high heat. Grill chicken 4-5 minutes per side, or just until center is no longer pink; do not over-cook. Baste with the ⅔ cup reserved sauce during the last couple of minutes during grill time (if you start basting too early, it will be more likely to burn.)

How can I get the sodium count for your recipes?

    • Desiray Blackburn June 27, 2017 at 6:28 pm Reply

I use Silver Swan Soy Sauce bought at Oriental stores, it has reduced salt.

Thank you so much for the suggestions.

I use Braggs liquid Amina’s, which is a natural soy, it has 320 in sodium. The others are so much higher, we love it

Linda…I am in full agreement with you. We use Braggs on everything

Really people, if you have to substitute every other ingredient, than this awesome recipe is not for you. Geeez

Every other ingredient? You are strange.

There as many Hulu Hulu cicken recupes as there are chickens . This one pretty close our native Hawaiian version but there are some key ingredients missing and techniques that are traditional that would make it truly awesome. But this will still be ok.

The question about sherry substitute is reasonable! Especially if you aren’t sure if you’ll use it again.

Cooking sherry is available. Why not use that, if you don’t want to use liquor store sherry?

You can substitute fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice for the sherry. It gives a nice contrast to the sweetness of the brown sugar and ketsup.

Thank you for actually giving an answer instead of complaining about people asking for substitutes> I really helps for those of us that need to adapt some things in a recipe due to many circumstances.

You can use some coconut sugar it’s low glycemic with honey. It works quite well for substitutions

I think pineapple juice would subst. sherry…good combination

I was thinking the same thing.

Instead of Sherry, you can substitute Holly. She’s way more flexible and won’t let you down. She is way more expensive though.

    Sweet Sherry or Dry Sherry?

  13. Ryan Ki June 13, 2017 at 5:43 am Reply

Never heard of huli huli chicken made this way. I should probably try it once. I was born and raised in Hawaii and all we did was add some Hawaiian salt and BBQ it using kieave charcoal ( the Hawaiian mesquite) I may have misspelled it. People would alway cook it for fundraisers. If your driving by, the huli huli chicken smell alway made the car automatically pull over and you would buy some to take home. But funny thing is it never made it home….lol

Does anyone know if I could make this in the oven if I broiled it near the end?? It sounds very tasty but I do not have a bbq!
    Thank you kindly,
    Linda
