This recipe has been a great success over at Brown Sugar! It has received so much wonderful feedback from readers. Let’s take a look at what some of them have said about this Texas sheet cake!

I LOVED this cake and I’m not a huge cake person. The fudge icing on top was the perfect touch. I wish I had more!

I made this cake two days ago, and it’s awesome. The cake texture is extraordinary and it tastes delicious. I’ll use the recipe again – both with the fudge icing and with buttercream frosting. I used a 9×13 pan – the ratio of cake to frosting is perfect. Thank you!

Ingredients:

FOR THE CAKE:
1 cup butter, cubed
1 cup water
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon almond extract (you can use vanilla extract if you prefer)
1/4 teaspoon baking soda

FOR THE FROSTING:
1 cup Sugar
½ cups unsweetened Cocoa powder, Sifted
½ cups Milk
4 Tablespoons Butter, cut into cubes
2 Tablespoons Light Corn Syrup
4 cups Powdered Sugar, Sifted
2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a 15×10 (for a thin cake) or a 9×13 baking pan.

Bring butter and water to a boil in a large saucepan. When the butter has melted, remove pan from heat. Add the flour, sour cream, salt, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, vanilla extract and eggs. Mix well to combine.

Pour the batter into the baking pan and bake for 18-22 minutes, until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Let cool for 20 minutes.

Frosting: Whisk together the sugar and cocoa in a large saucepan. Whisk in the milk, then add butter and corn syrup. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, whisking constantly. When the butter has melted and sauce is getting smoother, take the pan off the heat and stir in vanilla and confectioners’ sugar.

Pour the frosting on top of the slightly cooled cake. Allow the frosting to cool and set completely before cutting.
