Macaroni salad is a staple picnic food that my has at almost every summer gathering. We don’t just make this salad; we craft this salad with a chef-like precision. Ok, so we like to think so, anyway. Haha!
This recipe for mac salad is the bees knees, and you wanna know why? Because there is tuna fish in it. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “not everyone likes tuna!” I totally get that. I, particularly don’t like tuna, but when it’s intermingled in the savory ingredients of this salad, it truly becomes the “chicken of the sea.” Tuna gives this traditional BBQ salad such an awesome kick of flavor and protein.
If you aren’t a tuna fan, I encourage you to at least give this macaroni salad recipe a try. I just might make a believer out of you, yet! I have a house full of picky eaters and they gobbled this up so fast, I knew within minutes I should have made a double batch!

Quick Tip: If you honest to goodness cannot stand tuna, replace it with canned chicken.

I would probably X4 this recipe. I would use the little salad mac.And I always use miracle whip. I use both sweet and dill pickles. Vlasic for sure.
Thanks that sounds great to this. I have big family that LOVES Pasta salad of any kind
I always use Hellman Mayonnaise. Does not break like miracle whip. Good made with strawberries, grapes white and purple, seeded, and diced apple and mandarin oranges. Yum. Dressing mayonnaise, lemon juice, little sugar to sweeten. I always let dressings marinate together before folding into salad.
Kathleen Brave.. I to use small salad mac also miracle whip, never tuna eeuuu… I use chicken and shrimp.. Linda that sounds delicious but with miracle whip.
Keep it simple, theres too much stuff in it. I ve made tuna mac for years, I put ingredients in that TN majority of people will eat and theres never a drop left. Onions, finely chopped celery, tuna, eggs (opt), elbow or shells, miracle whip, vinegar. Simple.
Can you send me your recipe.sounds good.
I make macaroni salad. I use one box of Rotini, then I grate a little onion (my family isn’t to keen on a lot of onion) 2 cans of tiny shrimp and a jar of green olives (Chopped). Salt and pepper to taste and Hellman’s Mayo (It doesn’t break down). I have made it with Tuna instead of the shrimp.
I have also done this for years was raised on it but I use real mayo can’t stand miracle whip I also ad seasoned salt instead of regular.
Sally Moss can I have your recipe???
This Is nothing new tho. African American people have been doing this for years and years. This was the only way macaroni salad was made.
My family likes diced sharp cheese and diced ham in the mac salad instead of tuna.
Thats how I make mine as well. Only make it if there is a crowd coming as I would eat it all myself.
Nothing wrong with that at all. I’d be in the same boat. But then I’d have to share with you. lol
There are so many ways in which to make macaroni salad. I like tuna in my macaroni salad, also, but I add some chopped tomato to it, as well. Yummy
I put frozen green peas in mine. We like the pop they have.
Yes, we use frozen peas (thawed) in ours as well and also add the cubed cheese and cubed Spam or other more inexpensive ham. My husband dislikes tuna, and I miss it. But with some of the other things I add in I don;t miss it as much.
do you cook the peas, or just let them thaw in the salad?
Just thaw/defrost them. Don’t cook them beyond that because they will get mushy.
I’m going to try this with canned chicken instead of the tuna, since I’m the only tuna lover in a family of tuna-haters. I’m curious, though, about where the recipe’s author is still finding 6-ounce cans of tuna. Around here, the small cans are all only 5 ounces now.
5 ounces is the standard now , if you really want the extra ounce you would have to buy either multiple cans or a bigger can or Pouch..I have never purchased the pouches.. might be the answer??? 🙂 Or the recipe has been around a while or from the “old Days” when a can of tuna was still 6 full ounces…
Canned chicken is wonderful in mac salad!! Sometimes I use tuna but the chicken is my favorite!!
Yes me too. I don’t like tuna at all and for those who have fish allergies it works great
No tuna salad shrimp is what I use
I like onion soup mix and peas carrots in mine along with the mayo.
I MAKE MINE WITHE DICED TOMATOES AND TORN LETTUCE WONDERFUL!
This Southern girl uses baby shells instead of macaroni standard. I love it simple: Dukes Mayo, diced onion, hard boiled eggs, sweet relish, dried garlic and salt and pepper. I love it with a Peach vinegar added and tomatoes from my garden. Canned chicken is substituted sometimes because my husband does not like seafood.
I have been making a variation of this for years. My Mom’s recipe! Always gets rave reviews.
I use shrimp instead of tuna…yummy
I would steer clear of anything made with refined white wheat flour!
This is yummy – my family for generations have been making this though – nothing new. Must be a southern or poor people thing. LOL
I’d do canned chicken breast instead, for a BBQ. I need to try the Old Bay Seasoning. I’ve heard that really makes a difference in recipes.
I use shell mac. I use Miracle Whip, touch of mustard, chopped Gr.pepper, chopped tomatoes,a couple chopped boiled eggs, salt and pepper.stir gently.Slice a couple boiled eggs on top, sprinkle paprika over top.my son will eat it for Breakfast.we like it simple, the amount of seasoning is the main thing. This came down from my grandmother,my mom now me and i’m 79.
yummm
I have been making this since I was 10 I am now 66, my mother taught me, the only difference is I chop eggs, tomatoes , along with the tuna fish I use medium size shrimps cut in half,I slice eggs on top sprinkle with paprika
The easiest Pasta salad is to use 1 package of Angel Hair pasta and one bottle of Ken’s Sweet Vidalia Onion dressing. Just mix and refrigerate for a couple hours. If I am taking it to an event I add colorful veggies to it, such as little tomatoes, celery, green pepper etc. If it is too dry I add a little milk.
Have a hard time finding the Vidalia onion dressing were do you get yours? My dad loves it
I’m going to make this, but am going to use canned chunk chicken instead of tuna. My family don’t care for tuna as Keri’s family doesn’t.
I’ve always added finely grated up white tuna to my pasta salad…makes it yummy! Nothing new to me!!
I will make this but, without the tuna.
Peel and dice a couple apples and put in it. Delicious!
Replace tuna with boiled shrimp…..add diced fresh tomato was ny mother’s “go to” recipe!
I always make mine using imitation crab or lobster. My family prefers it to tuna.
I make mine with mac, hard boiled eggs, tuna, peas, onions, celery, tomato’s, mayo, salt, pepper and vinegar. It always gets eaten. I make a similar potato salad, minus the tuna, tomato’s, and peas. I have people who get me the ingredients for the potato salad, to make for them…cause they like it so much. Simple and testy.
mine is the best, so my friends say, just cooked mac, lots of mayo, cubed up cheddar cheese crumbled bacon, green onions and 1 table spoon of bacon grease, then topped with finely shredded cheddar and bacon bits
It was sounding pretty good until I got to the tuna. Think I’ll substitute shrimp for the tuna.
I always make my salad with Tuna.
I use flakes of ham
How do I pin this recipe so that I can save it?
DO YOU HAVE THE LITTLE INTEREST PIN ICON NEAR THE TOP OF YOUR PAGE WHERE THE ADDRESS FOR THE ARTICLE IS? CLICK ON IT. IF NOT THEN YOU’LL HAVE TO CALL YOUR DAUGHTER TO GET ONE THERE- THAT’S WHAT I DID! I’M PRETTY SURE A SON MIGHT BE ABLE TO FIGURE IT OUT IF YOU HAVE NO DAUGHTER….. 🙂
OOPS- PINTEREST- NOT INTEREST
my family has made mac/ tuna salad for years..we add peas….its also good with shrimp instead of tuna and my mother in law used to make a variation with libster and also black olives
Try using salad shrimp instead of Tuna! Maybe a little shredded cheddar!! It is very good!!!
I like a little chopped onion, pimento or sweet bottled red bell pepper, sliced olives, hard boiled eggs, sweet relish, finely chopped italian parsley and real mayo. Salt pepper to taste..
I personally don’t see a problem with that, as I’d do the exact same thing. Not everyone in my house likes macaroni salad, but I could live on the stuff.
I don’t add eggs, but I do add some chopped up cucumber and a little bit if honey mustard.
My mom used tuna for years and she also used tiny shrimp which is what I use..no eggs tho..too many veggies just onion, celery, and salt pepper, garlic powder, apple cidar vinegar, sweet gherkin pickle juice, a dash of sugar, mayo.
I change it up all the time. Instead of vinegar, I might use Italian salad dressing. I use fruits and vegetables — mandarin oranges, grapes, cucumbers, etc. I just go to the garden in the summertime, and pick whatever is ready (vegetables and herbs and spices) — I always have fruit on hand — I freeze strawberries, grapes, blueberries, raspberries, peaches, rhubarb — I tend to stay away from tomatoes. They don’t do well if not eaten that day, but I’ll garnish the dish with uncut grape tomatoes!
My mother made a similar salad in the summer. We loved it. Macaroni salad with an ear of corn and that would be a cheap, light dinner for the 6 of us on a warm summer day.
that’s my favorite dinner during the summers!!!
I…..LOVE…..these comments. LOL!
I love these comments too! Thank you ladies for sharing all of your wonderful ideas!!
I’m going to try many of them. Adding the shrimp really sounds yummy!! ??
I use leftover BBQ Chicken, that you get at Supermarket. You get to enjoy Chicken with all the fixins, then a few Sandwiches, yummy , Chicken Sandwiches, then de-bone & put leftovers in Salad. Sorry I’m long winded, or so I’ve been told. LOL
I make this recipe all the time, but with some modification. I delete the relishes, and instead of Mayo, I use Miracle Whip (More than a cup and a half.)This is the recipe I am asked to make most often for cookouts!
I was brought up with this macaroni salad but without the tuna in it.Instead my Mom also added diced tomatoes, diced cucumbers & sliced radishes along with the other same ingredients in this recipe.
I always think of my Mom, she made the best macaroni salad and now that she’s gone, I always feel close to her when I make it. She used ditalini pasta instead of elbow and I’ve tried both. My family and friends prefer the ditalini. We did not put any meat or fish, but in the past several years I put in El Pollo Loco grilled chicken and it really took it to the next level. However, since we moved to Missouri from CA, I’ve improvised with grilled chicken or rotisserie chicken. This salad is addictive. My niece now calls it “Aunt Karen’s mac salad”. The tradition continues:) Enjoy whatever you’re eating in fellowship with others! It’s wonderful to share life together!
Canned Chicken is better then the tuna.
Where is the printable recipe? Why buy canned chicken? Are Americans too lazy to cook their own chicken??? Really?
What is the meaning of life? Where do babies come from? Am I here or am I there?
It’s called busy- just more convenient to use already prepped! Where are YOU from Wally Roode?
I use small shell pasta eggs chopped red onion green pepper celery mix a little yellow mustard with mayonnaise add a little milk to thin the dressing add salt pepper put in a bowl add sliced egg on top and sprinkle with paprika yummo!!
if you add tuna, then its called tuna salad, if you add salmon etc. if its left without any meats or fish, then its called macaroni salad. it is how to distinguish what is in the salad
I have been making this salad since I was 10 I am 66 now, my mother taught me the only difference is, I chop tomatoes, eggs, and medium shrimps cut in half, then I slice boil eggs on top sprinkle with paprika ( I use tuna fish also)
I put 1cup of cubed Velveta cheese .
everybody LOVES my tuna/mac salad! always use HELLMANN’S reg. mayo (use LOTS) & Lawry’s seasoning salt. use lots of sweet relish. dried onion & celery seed can be used if you don’t have the fresh. i heard the fresh salad shrimp or the sea legs can be used instead.
I’ve been making this for years.. But to kick it up a notch, I throw in homemade Cole Slaw as well, along with tuna fish.. Make this and mix a small batch. Then if you like it, make the bigger amount.. My kids and husband loved this dish, it’s a complete meal..
CELERY CUTS THAT FISHY TASTE YOU GET IN TUNA. CHANGES IT TO YUMMY. I ALWAYS USE CELERY WITH TUNA, IN TUNA FOR SANDWICHES OR ANY THING ELSE . IT TASTE LIKE CRAP OTHER WISE.
Jane Arp. I use small shells for the Mac. I use about a cup of finely chopped red onion, chopped sweet pickle and chopped celery. One pound fresh small salad size shrimp. I use Best Foods mayonnaise and Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ SAUCE. I mix it to taste with salt and pepper. It is usually a nice pink color.. It matches the pink shrimp. Yum!
Don’t you cook the macaroni pasta?
