It’s no secret, meatloaf has been a staple part of the American dinner table years. However, some recipes are better than others. We confidently say that this particular meatloaf recipe is the best. Hands down, no questions asked. You’ll most definitely being hiding this little gem away in your recipe collection box. However, don’t hide it to well because you’ll certainly want to reference it again very soon. I have this little recipe box that I found at a yardsale a few years back. It’s quite vintage looking and I absolutely love it!
Check out what my friends over at Real Life Dinner had to say about this delicious recipe:
Truth be told, I’m always a little shocked by how excited my kids get when I make meatloaf. I mean it’s meatloaf, isn’t there a rule somewhere that kids aren’t supposed to like it? I always thought I was just one of those weird kids who actually liked it.
I know that my kids were elated when they knew I was making this meatloaf. Shucks, my siblings and I used to get super charged up when my mom was making meatloaf, too! I guess meatloaf can officially be considered a kid-friendly food 🙂
Ingredients
1½ lbs ground beef
¾ cup Quaker quick oatmeal
¾ cup TruMoo milk
1 Eggland’s Best egg
½ cup onion, finely diced
1¼ tsp Morton salt
¼ tsp McCormick black pepper
⅓ cup Heinz ketchup
2 tbsp Domino brown sugar
1 tbsp French’s mustard
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Combine ground beef, oatmeal, milk, egg, onion, salt and pepper in a medium sized mixing bowl. Using your hand, incorporate everything into the meat. This only takes 30 seconds or so, you do not want to over mix.
Transfer meat into a large loaf pan and press it down evenly into the pan.
Mix ketchup, brown sugar, and mustard in a small bowl. Pour over meatloaf.
Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 20 minutes
Remove from oven and drain off excess grease. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Quick Tip: Brush on a little extra sauce to the meatloaf a few minutes before it’s done baking for a saucier topping.
Thank you to Maria from Real Life Dinner for this amazing meatloaf masterpiece.

this is how I’ve been making my meatloaf for a lot of years.
Me too. Got it from a woman who worked in the kitchen at the G E plant in Tyler Tx in 1954. Very good served with macaroni/cheese and baked beans.
Shirley, I am from Tyler too and tell everyone about all the wonderful choices of home cooked meals at John Tyler High School and also at my elementary school in Pine Springs. The meatloaf was fantastic and they even made onions & liver delicious with all the gravy! I keep looking for recipes from that time period. Schools just do not have the good foods that we were so fortunate to have before GMO frankenfoods arrived.
Love it!!!! GMO frankenfoods.
Shirley, you mention Tyler, Tx in 1954….did you know any Webbs in that area? My father was born there and I believe some of his cousins and their families still are in that area. My email address is [email protected] if you have knowledge of them.
Miriam Bacon
My meatloaf is better!!
will you share your recipe?
Tell use your recipe and we’ll be the Judge(s)…
Doesn’t the sauce tend to burn at 350 for an hour and twenty?
Good morning, can I get someone to e-mail me the recipe for the meat loaf. I can bring it up. [email protected] thank very much.
Just sent it Buddy.
I can’t get it to come up either.
Please call me the next time you serve this meal.
I too have been making this meat loaf for years.
Same here.
Me as well. I add a little oregano and make sandwiches the next day with marinara and melted mozzarella on a French roll. Like a meat ball sandwich. My husband loved these leftovers
I think this has been around since the dark ages. It’s really good and needs a tweek now and again to change it up for variety. I make another one similar – sort of – ground beef, breadcrumbs or oats, salt, pepper, sage, tomato soup, onion. Mix and shape a loaf, cover the top with sliced onion and pour slightly diluted tomato soup over it all. Fantastic. Opps, I guess it’s not much like the original recipe posted here. 🙂
Same Here, my Granny used it right off the Oatmeal Box. Except without the milk. Might need to add it next time!
Where are the directions?
I would like the recipe.
Need directions also
Why put milk in meatloaf? Thanks.
I’ve been making it this way since my kids were little and the youngest is 35. I originally used crackers, but although good, they are empty calories. I wanted to make it as nutritious as possible.
I don’t use any filler in my meatloaf, I do add green pepper. But this recipe is pretty traditional.
Ha ! this is almost exactly my meatloaf recipe….. !
I’ve used my recipe for 52 years and passed it on to the next 2 generations. I make mine using french bread soaked in the egg & milk mixture and add a dash of nutmeg to the sauce mixture. Think I’m going to try this one for a change!
Do not care for oats, prefer crackers or bread crumbs, I make my own bbq sauce and use that with my homemade ketchup, with peppers and onions, egg, salt and pepper and garlic powder. So many ways to make meatloaf. I have celiac so use my stuff when making it, would love to try crushed pretzels in it to see how that would so and use less salt.
I was just diagnoised with celiac would u mind giving me ur recipe??
If you have Celiac disease, you can’t use cracker, bread crumbs, or crushed pretzels as all contain wheat flour with gluten. No-no’s for Celiac disease. Stick with the oats and lake sure the label certifies they are gluten free. I’ve used the recipe on the Quaker oats box for years, long before we knew anything about Celiac disease or gluten intolerantce. Very similar to this recipe and delicious!
You can use Snyder’s gluten free pretzels IN meatballs, meatloaf, just just put in a zip lock bag and use A rolling pin.crush as small as you like
I use stove top stuffing instead of bread crumbs..you’ve got all your spices in it..A 1/4 cup BBQ sauce in mix, onions, eggs and BBQ sauce on top..Hubby loves it
My daughter has celiac.. my recipe is almost exactly the same. I use Oats; BBQ sauce and Ketchup for the top and I double my eggs (2) for two pounds of 80/20 ground beef. Makes it so moist. She has no problem with digesting this at all. Its pretty good too. My husband will sometimes add a bit of shredded carrots in it. Its pretty good! I use BOB MILL rolled oats.
Use gluten free oat meal, gluten free bread made into cubes or crumbs. My favorite gf pretzels are by Gratify.
Oats are gluten free.
Is there any way I can have your recipe? My daughter and I have celiac and i’m having trouble bring up the recipe. Thanks so much!
My daughter has celiac and I have always used 1/4 c dry uncooked Cream of Rice cereal in my meatloaf recipe that is nearly identical to this recipe. It soaks up the milk and juices and is really very good. I havent made meatloaf any other way for nearly 30 years! I do add garlic, oregano, and Italian seasoning and skip the sweet topping.
I too have Celiac, but make a great meatloaf that my whole family loves.
You can use crushed Gluten Free Pretzels or crushed Gluten Free Croutons! They sell both at grocers like Walmart.
I use chili sauce instead of ketchup, then ketchup drizzled for the last 15 minutes.
**I use muffin pans to make mini loaves. It’s great for portion control, lunches, or freezing extras. At 425 degrees for 30-45mins it’s a great time saver too.
Hope this helps!
I found gluten free bread crumbs recently at Walmart. Don’t remember the brand. You can also use the gluten free bread crumbled up as the filler.
Mary, I now make a vegetable/mea loaf that is very very good. No eggs, bread cru bs, or milk.
I use carrots, celery, salsa, picante, pork, chicken and beef. Flavoring comes from the packets of onion soup and salsa. If you are interested,
et me know. Mary
Would you kindly send me your recipe for this meatloaf. My grandddaugher is gluten intolerant and this should solve a family dinner for all of us and she.
Thanks you.
Kit
Instead of bread or oats I use honey BBQ potato chips or Ritz crackers
I always replace breadcrumbs with almond meal.
hate oatmel, tastes gross with it, and the recipe is the normal one everyone uses, nothing new. now add a little brown suger and cheese, yummy
I have this recipe almost exactly but I make mine in the micro. Yes I said micro in a bundt pan. Only takes 20min. Will never make it in the oven again.
Yay! Great idea!
I have a friend who told me to cook meat loaf in the microwave and it was quick and good. She made small individual meat loafs for she and her husband. I tried it and they are good and quick.
My meatloaf recipe (the one I grew up eating and got from my mom) is a microwave recipe. Super easy and doesn’t heat the house up in the summer!
What kind of bundt pan? I’ve never seen one in plastic or glass.
use a round glass dish and place a glass in the middle to mimic a bundt pan
If you use a glass dish,or any glassware, make sure it is microwave safe !
Turn that glass upside down and all the grease is pulled up in glass during cooking. WW tip.
I ordered my bake ware from QVC, it is a microwave bundt and muffin pan and loaf pan,it can go in oven too, just go to QVC.COM.
What do you set the micro on & for how long
The one thing I learned in an Anatomy Class was how the microwave unravels protein, thereby destroying it.
https://www.quora.com/Does-microwave-radiation-increase-the-rate-of-protein-unfolding-denature-proteins-in-food?srid=OsCl&share=ba50afe7
How long in the microwave? Does it get brown on top?
being in Tx, I add a can of Rotel tomatoes, w/ green chilis,. A favorite way in my house.
Or salsa instead of catsup. Inside & on top.
my Mom made Meatloaf with Ground Beef, ground pork and ground veal. bread, egg and milk.. best ever!!!
Please tell me this is my friend Linda Bassett from Tampa. I hope sp!! It’s laurie Garrett and I’ll see if you are on facebook. Hope all is well.
My meatloaf is almost identical. I don’t use mustard and I’ll use a BBQ sauce instead of making it myself but I’ve made it both ways. If I’m out of oats, I use crackers I pretty much clean out the fridge & cupboards when making meatloaf., you never know what your going to find…lol
Can you give me the directions for the meat loaf? Thank you! Victoria k
Hi mary, click on the “get directions” button on the second page. Have a great day!
Please give us the amounts to these ingredients re: meatloaf recipe. Thanks!
I use cracker crumbs instead of oats, I saute onions celery and green peppers and use beef broth instead of milk, makes killer meatloaf
How much beef broth with 1 lb?
I use the oats but with tomato juice, onoins green peppers, chili powder, salt and black pepper. No mustard.
I done in Quaker Instant Oats and also with bread or crackers but I also add some powder garlic. Good stuff! Love leftovers for sandwiches, too.
You have that Right ! I do the same, my son loves it !
Anyone try putting chunky salsa in their meatloaf? I have been doing it for a while now. It’s delicious. I add eggs and crackers.
ALWAYS. Since I’ve been in Texas … 30 yrs.
I use canned diced tomatoes with their juice instead of any other liquid. a stalk of celery,1/2 green and 1/2 red bell pepper, diced onions, eggs breadcrumbs, 1/2 cup ketchup, 1Tbl Chicago Steak seasoning, or use Montreal Steak seasoning and 2 tsps soy sauce. put all in the food processor or blender and process until smooth. Put 2 lbs ground beef in a bowl. pour in the mixture from the blender and mix gently with your hands. Use a loaf pan or make two smaller loaves and place in a 9×13 pan.. Bake 350 for one hour. Either glaze with some ketchup mixed with brown sugar, or brush the top with olive oil and bake at 375 for another 15 mnutes.
My meatloaf is a four meat and it’s awesome!
Turkey, pork, beef and bacon. Who doesn’t love bacon? I make it with a homemade tomato sauce for the top and its yummy and juicy. My pan feeds about 65 and there’s never any left. I use stuffing mix instead of bread crumbs or crackers or oats and it not only makes it more moist but it adds a sweet thanksgivingy flavor that just burst your taste buds open. I’ve tried many recipes. But..the one I made is just hands down the best! ?
Jennifer, Do you cook the bacon first or grind or chop it before mixing it with the other meats? I, too, use stuffing mix. Yummy!
Jennifer, do you happen to have a recipe for your version of meatloaf?
Thanks in advance…linda.
This is a excellent recipe. Most people mes up with the oatmeal versus crackers, bread, etc…. That is the problem. My mother used Saltines. I used croutons. It will flavor it to no end. Nothing fancy just regular croutons. As far as people using this for years…. True Moo had not been out for even 10. Milk is milk unless your getting chocolate and some of it has aspartame in it if it is flavored. So this is a great recipe. I will try it with the oatmeal. Why not. I love meatloaf. This is something my husband can make better than my self……and my son whom is 31 years young will eat both loafs himself. He loves it. SO Oatmeal here I come. I if dont get it for me ……back to croutons. THe croutons are just regular ones……but add so much flavor; And I do crush most of them up except for about 10. We use lean ground beef……..if not I will pour the grease off about 10 minutes before its done……and its like using 90 percent ground beef. Love me some meatloaf!
I think they don’t mean TruMoo, just regular milk.
I always mix the egg and oatmeal and let it sit a few minutes before mixing it into the meat. soooo good and moist and juicy!!
I have the same recipe been making this meatloaf just like this for years
What are the steps? what do you set the oven on 375% or what. they didn’t tell us how to mix the ingredients. will you do the honors & walk me through it. Thanks!
This is just like the way I have always made it. I make it like this because my Mom made it this way. If you put potatoes in the oven with the meat loaf to bake, you get an aroma that is mind boggling!!
I like tomato soup rather than ketchup or BBQ sauce or at least a mixture of tomato soup and ketchup on top and a large tbsp of tomato soup stirred into the mixture. I use crushed crackers and a little chopped green pepper for additional taste. I bake in microwave or oven. Both are great.
I stuff my meatloaf with either ham and cheese or stovetop stuffing.
I have been using this recipe all of my adult life ~ but I use tomato sauce in lieu of Ketchup… great recipe.
I noticed some one else uses stuffing mix in lieu of Oats, I may have to try this too. 🙂
This has been my traditional recipe for years, but I’ve always used canned Pet milk. Once in awhile I use 1/2 beef and 1/2 ground Italian sausage. The 2nd way I change it up is to use 1/2 ground beef and 1/2 ground ham, tossing in a bit of well-drained crushed pineapple. The rest of the recipe never changes. I’m sure some of you have twists to this too
made it, something missing. almost identical to my quaker oats recipe. instead of water, use tomato juice or ketcup In the recipe.
Years ago I found a meatloaf recipe that “sounded” good, but I wound up changing it enough that I can now call it “my own”. Beef and pork, bread crumbs, dried minced onion, Worcestershire sauce, small can of mushrooms (drained, then finely chopped), egg, evaporated milk w/mushroom liquid, salt/pepper. Baked for 1 hour. Mix mushroom soup, jarred mushroom or beef gravy, water and a squirt of lemon juice. Pour half over baked loaf, keep basting to keep the top glistening and browned. Pour remainder around and continue for another half hour. Delicious!!
Sounds like the recipe that I use…infact, it’s my mom’s recipe. The change in it, we use CORN FLAKES, instead of oats!!! Ha- Meatloaf, never get tired of it!! LOL
This is a pretty basic meatloaf recipe. This would be a little too bland for me.it is a good base, but there are lots of ingredients you can add to bump up the flavor.
It looks good. Almost like mine which gets the best compliment: every last bite gone. That’s when I started making two at a time.
I use 5 ounces of Carnations evaporated milk instead of Moomilk, add 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, and substitute 1/2 cup of Stovetop Sage Dressing crumbs instead of bread crumbs. This is an old family recipe about 70 years old of my late grandmother’s. She would just finely mince a garlic clove as I don’t think the powder was available back then. She would mix up bread crumbs and Sage as there was no Stovetop Dressing back then.
Who cannot wait to try this
I use pizza sauce. Love it. Instead of bbq or ketchup. Try it. Kids love it..
I’ve been making a meatloaf for years that has become my family’s favorite. I found the recipe at allrecipes.com It’s far better than this one.
My 93 year old mother had a recipe that made you slap someone and this is not it. I still make it and it’s off the chain. Everyone can make it they way they want but the old fashioned way is the best! Where is the crackers, bread crumbs, bell peppers, and tomato paste. Milk in meatloaf I can’t imagine that.
you are so correct JSmith…and cooking with a microwave WOW…Not saying it is not good meatloaf just not for me and my family….
And I also use a 50/50 mic of turkey and ground chuck
i’ve been cooking meatloaf in microwave since 1984. best method !
where is the actually recipe for this?
I used to boil two eggs and bury them whole in the meatloaf so that when you slice it, you get some of the egg.
Iwant to see the recipe for this
My meatloaf does not use any bread/oat ingredients. I use 2lb lean hamburger and 1 lb sage bulk sausage. I also put ketchup, steak sauce (like A1) and Worcestershire in the mix. I then add onion, egg and a variety of herbs (my secret). I bake this on a wire rack to keep them out of drippings. There are never any leftovers.
Wow! That sounds really good. I’d like to try it.
I have been making meatloaf like this for years. Brown sugar is the key ingredient. Also some brown sugar needs to be added to the ketchup on top. It is delicious as a main dish or also on a sandwich. Enjoy! Nancy L. Mounts
Can’t find the recipe for the meatloaf. All I get is a picture.
Sorry. Found it. Too early in the morning.
My husband once said that my meatloaf could wipe out a third world country so I quit making it. I keep hearing about this recipe and think I’ll try it. I loathe onions and refuse to cook with them, so I’ll leaving them out. Would breadcrumbs work instead of oatmeal
I have always used bread crumbs for my recipe and its a lot better I think. Oats seem to make the meatloaf slimy tasting. I dont know maybe its me lol
Green pepper
Meat loaf mix
Dried onions or minced
Tomato sauce
1 egg
Bread crumbs
Mix together, top it with tomato sauce and bake
Mine is probably a simple recipe but Ive gotten a lot of compliments on it
Also covering the dish with aluminum foil the first part of cooking gets it done faster. Take off and let the meatloaf get brown
Im thinking of making a meatloaf now! lol
The meat ground chuck or ground round doesnt make a good one. Meat thats around 80% is the best I think
The sauce is great but the meatloaf itself, not so much. Rather bland. Omit the milk, add a can of drained diced tomatoes, a green pepper, an additional egg and a tbs of worcestershire to make it tasty!
I make mine with Hamburger meat, italian sausage…herb stuffing(crunched) meatloaf sauce and onions, bell peppers and once its almost dome ketchup on top.mmmm Cannot beat it.Just poor off the fat of the meat during the cooking and it will not be as greasy.”mother of 7′
I make my Meatloaf just like this except I wet a couple of slices of bread, squeeze it out and mix in the meatload, no oats. But the best part of mine is 1 BOX FROZEN SPINACH, thawed and well drained!, mixed with a small container of cottage cheese! Here’s the deal > put 1/2 the meatloaf in a loaf pan, spread the spinach/cottage cheese on the top, put the rest of the meatloaf over it and seal the edges. bake! FABULOUS
I forgot to say, put brown sugar and a teaspoon of Grape Jelly also in the sauce on top! Lana
I LOVE meatloaf! My recipe isnt like this at all and its great. I dont use oats, ketchup, or milk in mine. Green peppers give it a GREAT flavor too. Ive eatan meatloaf with BBQ sauce and that was very good
I have tried numerous meatloaf recipes over the years but the absolute hands down best i’ve ever made is Paula Deens basic meatloaf recipe.
Use a basic or try putting a can of Rogelio in the meatloaf for a little spice. If you want to kick it up a notch, instead of using ketchup put chili sauce on top.
Try salad croutons instead of oats or crackers and instead of Brown sugar use s plenda and Dijon mustard
I use crushed Ritz crackers and a very similar recipe. This is the recipe that I grew up with. Of course, I have to use a full sleeve of Ritz crackers now unlike the 3/4 package that the recipe actually call for but because Ritz has reduced the quantity in their packages….like so many other companies.
My secret ingredients Worcestershire bacon beer the rest are simular
If you cook the meatloaf in the mìcrowave,, how many minutes do you leave it in…?
I make this almost the same way but I use bread crumbs not oats and I saute onions and bell peppers and add them great flavor.
I started using boxed stuffing mix instead of crackers, bread, or oats. One of the main reasons, is that it includes several items that I would use anyway…bits of onion, celery, seasoning, etc. My favorite to use is a cornbread stuffing mix. I break it up a little in the pouch, and add it (dry) to my meat mixture, along with 2-3 eggs, additional secret seasonings, Lea & Perrin’s steak sauce, some chunky salsa, and a splash of milk. My family loves it, and my parents have started using the stuffing mix in their meatloaf too!
Hi. Can someone tell me what TrueMoo Milk is? I’m assuming its regular milk and maybe just a brand name?
Close to my recipe too however, I use a splash of vinegar in the ketchup and brown sugar mixture. OH, SO DIVINE!
Meat loaf white beans and coleslaw hush puppies my favorite meal
I use hamburger meat, eggs, tomato paste, dried onion soup mix, italian bread crumbs. I mix all together then bake. I make my sauce with tomato paste, brown sugar and water. Pour over top of meatloaf and continue baking. Everyone that says they hate meatloaf says this is the best they ever have and I never have leftovers.
This is so close to my meatloaf – but I top it with tomato sauce, then lay 3 or 4 slices of applewood smoked backon on top – totally unhealthy, but heavenly – after the meatload is cooked, just put it under the broiler for a few seconds to finish off the bacon. Yum – I’m hungry!
I use
this recipe except I use Panko whole wheat crumbs instead of Oatmeal. And I have never added ketchup. about a tablespoon of dry mustard. I will try this exact recipe and see what we think.
For those who think it is dry, I would use 80/20 ground beef and cook at 350 for 1 hour.
I have to ask. At what temperature, and for how long? I love meatloaf, but have never cooked one myself, and this recipe makes me want to try.
The only difference in this recipe and my mother’s is the Quaker oats, she uses saltine crackers instead. I may just try this version, though. It sounds yummy too.
My mother made meatloaf just like this. Poor mans dinner, but still one of the best dinners my mother made….
What exactly is TruMoo milk? Is that just a brand name of milk?
NEVER heard of putting Milk in a Meatloaf!! This is my Mom’s recipe almost exactly except for the milk (yuk) and she used saltines and not oats. Also put Bacon strips on top!
Can’t wait to try your recipes
This site was… how ddo I say it? Relevant!!
Finally I’ve found something which helpedd me. Thanks!
My recipe is almost exactly the same, only I use crushed vegetable crackers instead of bread crumbs or oats…They add a great flavor and everyone loves it!!
I cannot view the recipe, but I know I am not a sweets person. Sorry, but I do not like sugar in my food recipes, especially in my meatloaf. Rather than the icky catsup topping, I wrap mine with prosciutto. Instead of milk in the meat mixture, I use a small amount of ricotta cheese for moistness…much better. Just my opinion.
Just a follow-up to my last comment….meatloaf is as subjective as chili. I just think a variety of meats give extra flavor. Just cook what your family enjoys.
I like using 1 lb. 85% hamburger and 1 lb. 93% ground turkey. Put five slices stale white bread, fresh italian parsley, 2 slices (approx 1/3 cup) onion, 3 cloves garlic in a food processor. Mix well then add to meat with two eggs and salt, pepper to taste. Mix by hand, form a loaf and place in a covered roasting pan at 325 degrees for an hour and 5 minutes. Our family slices off a piece then top the slice with ketchup..
For the meatloaf do I mix all ingredients together and put in a 9×5 loaf pan at 350 degrees for one hour Thank you very much Judy T
My dad made this meatloaf. It think he got it off the oatmeal box originally but he used the both oats and a handful of crushed crackers and instead of regular milk he used buttermilk. He said the buttermilk help make it firm and hold together. It is the best meatloaf I have ever had.
Yum yum to all the recipes. I don’t add milk I use drained diced tomatoes, onions, bell pepper, beef, sausage & venison mixture, egg or eggs depending on how much meat mixture. Salt, pepper, garlic powder to taste. Top with picante sauce with a little brown sugar in it. @350 degrees until done. For variety instead of picante sauce use brown gravy instead.
Been making the exact sauce for past 30 years. Same meatloaf not milk but one small can of tomato juice.
Made my best tasting meatloaf just last week. I used Italian bread crumbs instead of crackers or oats. I had a bottle of maple syrup that only a wee bit in the bottom of the bottle (maybe 1 or 2 tablespoon). Rather than rinse it out for recycling, I put a few tablespoons of water in the bottle to free the syrup from the bottom and added that to the meat mixture. It was delicious, my husband loved it and he is not big on meatloaf. I usually put 2 hard boiled eggs int the center of the meatloaf, learned that from my mother.
To the basic recipe I add mushrooms, green chilis and the onion sautéd in olive oil plus shredded Colby and Monterrey Jack cheese to the mix for a southwest flavor. To add some more zip, sometimes I a little cayenne red pepper to the dish. This is also fantastic with ground venison and other wild game meats.
Why, oh why, must we add sugar to every single recipe? It adds absolutely no health benefit, actually just the opposite!
Feel free to leave it out, Lisa 🙂
My kids live my recipe more.
1 lb lean ground beef
1/2 lb ground pork
1 tbsp worchestier
1 tsp pepper
2 tsp salt
1 egg
1 1/2 C panko crumbs
1 large onion minced fine in food processor
4 carrots minced in food processor
1/4 c ketchup
Mix everything together well with your hands. Get a cookie sheet lined with parchment and form a uniform loaf. Baste top with more ketchup.
Bake at 350 for 75-80 min
You’re welcome
We never said, “thank you”.
I have used this, I double it using a large stoneware it takes a little longer to cook. Never have thrown any out Lol
This is how I have made mine for many years also except…………instead of oatmeal I tear up several pcs of bread in it’s place and love the taste. I found the recipe years ago in a cookbook by Aunt Bea on The Andy Griffin Show.
I put in Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce instead of brown sugar and ketchup.
Switch the beef for venison. I use bbq sauce instead of brown sugar. Depending on what bbq sauce you use, the flavor will change.
I love meat loaf but I hardly ever make it. This looks so good I think it will be made for supper tonight. We had it it a lot when I was growing up. My Mom used to make two. One was for supper and the other was for sandwiches. I love meatloaf sandwiches!
Have anyone made it with TruMoo if so was it chocalate
Why are all the ingredients given brand names? Oh right, because this is an ADVERTISMENT that someone PAID to put on the internet. Wake up people.
No it isn’t, Steve. I add the brand names to give people an idea of what I use in my recipes because this question has come up many times. I wish these major corporations would pay me but they don’t. They probably don’t even know that I exist. Have a great day! Oh, and P.S. What does it matter if someone were to advertise on their blog? It’s how a lot of people make a living. Is there something wrong with folks using the internet to make a living in a perfectly legitimate and legal way? Are businesses around your town not supposed to advertise on billboards or signs? “food” for thought, sir 🙂
I have at least a dozen different meat loaf recipes–all of which are interesting variations–but we always come back to this one for satisfying, old-fashioned comfort food. The only thing I add is a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce which gives it a slight flavor kick.
The ketchup, dry mustard and brown sugar mixture is called piquant sauce. It is in my 1943 Red Plaid cookbook. I have always substituted rolled oats for the bread crumbs it calls for and sometimes I use tomato juice rather than milk.
I make my mother’s recipe: 1 lb. 93% lean gr. beef, 1 lb 85% lean gr beef, diced onion, diced green bell pepper, 1 large egg, crushed Club crackers (she used Saltines), 1 small can of tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper to taste. Combine all and cover with uncooked bacon. Bake at 375-400 degrees for about 45 minutes. You can add Worcestershire sauce if you like it. I don’t. I brush a little ketchup over the meatloaf the last 10 minutes or so and put the bottle on the table because my husband loves it. I can’t tell you the amounts of anything, because I have been making it for 45 years (I’m 68) and I never measure the ingredients. I do it by feel and smell. Neither did my mother. We like it.
I don’t really follow any recipe, but I know what I believe works. I do hamburger meat, eggs, salt, pepper, onion, a little oregano, a little worshtershire sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, garlic powder, whatever crackers I have – I prefer ritz. Mix well with hands – form my loaf and spread ketchup all on the top. Bake 350 for about an hour.
Tomato sauce, or tomato paste and a little water. If you are using the Lipton onion soup mix and a little water you can omit the milk. Milk only adds a little moisture, makes it less dry.
This all sounds so good but none of it beat’s my Moms meat loaf May she RIP ..she could just throw it together and it never fail to be best yet, smelled so good didn’t want to put too much of anything else on your plate to fill you up till you got your fill of her meatloaf….
