If you are contemplating whether or not to make meatloaf for dinner tonight please consider making this applesauce version. It’s super moist and taste bud tantalizing!

I had never thought of using applesauce in a meatloaf recipe but this one turned out so flavorful that it became a family favorite immediately. We haven’t made another recipe since I found this one! Sometimes I even make this for family gatherings and it always gets rave reviews. I might even make this during the holidays!

Ingredients

1 1/2 lbs extra-lean ground beef, about 90 percent

1/2 lb ground pork

1/2 cup finely chopped onion

1 Eggland’s egg, beaten

3/4 cup applesauce

1 cup bread crumbs

3 Tbsp Heinz ketchup

1 1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly grease a 9-by-5-by-3-inch loaf pan.

In a large bowl, combine the two ground meats with the chopped onion, egg, applesauce, bread crumbs, ketchup, salt, and pepper; mix thoroughly with your hands.

Pat the meatloaf mixture into the prepared loaf pan.

Bake the meatloaf in the preheated oven for 1 1/2 hours. If desired, take the meatloaf out about 10 minutes before it’s done, pour off excess grease, and spread ketchup or barbecue sauce over the top.

Return the loaf to the oven and continue baking until it’s done.

The minimum safe temperature for ground beef and ground pork is 160° F (71.1 °C). If in doubt, check by inserting an instant-read thermometer into the center of the loaf.

Note: If you happen to substitute ground poultry, the minimum safe temperature is 165° F (73.9 °C).

Let the meatloaf cool for 10 minutes; remove it to a platter and slice.
