If you’ve only had baked beans heated, straight from the can, you’re in for a big surprise.

These Pennsylvania Dutch baked beans with tomato, bacon and brown sugar are so much tastier than anything you’ve ever tried before! They make a great side dish for any meal, and I have been known to have these for breakfast, too, with some scrambled eggs. Super delicious, and they won’t break the bank, either!

Ingredients

2 cans butter beans – drained and rinsed

1 small can tomato paste

1/8 cup cider vinegar

1/2 cup Domino brown sugar (adjust the amount to your taste)

1 lb bacon, chopped

1/2 medium onion – chopped

1/4 cup water

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350F. Spray a baking dish with cooking spray.

Render bacon with onion in a skillet until browned and crisp.

Drain all but about 2 Tbsp of bacon grease, then return pan to heat.

Add tomato paste, vinegar, brown sugar and water. Stir to combine, and heat through.

Add beans and carefully fold them in. When combined, transfer everything to the prepared casserole dish and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour, stirring once halfway through.
