You’ll Never Guess The Surprise Ingredient In These Stupendous Baked Beans!

My family really enjoys these baked beans. The light apple flavor is well received by the spicy bite of the cayenne pepper seasoning.

I scaled the cayenne down just a tad because my younger kids do not like “hot” stuff. My husband, on the other hand, was sprinkling a bit more pepper onto his serving. It all worked out in the end. I think these beans are wonderful for taking to a picnic in the park, backyard BBQ, or church potluck to share with others.

One extra tip for you; cook and crumble some crispy bacon on top of your serving. You won’t regret it!

 

Ingredients

55 oz can of baked beans

1 large apple (i used fuji.), diced or cut into chunks

1/2 c natural applesauce

Freshly grated nutmeg to taste

2 Tbsp dijon mustard

1 pinch small pinch, McCormick cayenne pepper

2-4 Tbsp Domino brown sugar, light

1 lb hot ground sausage (i used venison sausage.)

1 small onion, diced

 

Instructions

1. Brown the sausage with the onions. Drain off grease.

2. Place the applesauce, apple chunks, mustard, brown sugar, cayenne pepper into a bowl. Grate in fresh nutmeg. It only takes a little nutmeg. Too much will overpower the other flavors. Stir together until mixed well.

3. In large bowl, mix the spicey apple mixture into the beans. Add sausage and onions. Fold in.

4. Bake in a glass or stoneware dish at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
