Hungarian goulash was a staple meal in my home when I was growing up. Did you have any traditional meals that were regularly prepared when you were a child?
I know there are many variations of goulash available in the world today, but I’m telling you folks, this Hungarian recipe is the best.
You won’t another recipe like it and honestly, you won’t need to once you taste this goodness. You’ll also find that this goulash is very easy to make. I love serving this with noodles or mashed potatoes but my husband would probably like to eat it as a stew, without any sides!
Ingredients
2 pounds top round beef, cut into 1-inch pieces
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup chopped onion
2 Tbsp Gold Medal flour
1 Tbsp paprika
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp salt
1 (28 oz.) can whole tomatoes, undrained, coarsely chopped
3 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks
red and green bell peppers, chopped (optional)
1 bay leaf
8 oz. Daisy sour cream
Warm cooked buttered noodles or rice
Instructions:
In a crock pot, combine the meat, onion, and garlic; mix well.
In a small bowl, mix together flour, paprika, salt, pepper, and thyme. Add this to the meat mixture in the crock pot, tossing to coat well.
Add tomatoes with liquid, carrots, chopped bell peppers (if using) and bay leaf; mix well.
Cover and cook on HIGH setting 4-1/2 to 5 hours or on LOW setting 8 to 9 hours, or until beef is fork-tender.
Remove bay leaf. Stir in sour cream. Serve over noodles or rice.
