Anyone who knows me is aware that I love cooking a dish that’s both creamy and cheesy. This recipe by Southern bite offers both of my favorite things in a single recipe—baked garlic cheese grits. The garlic is just the perfect addition to an otherwise already heavenly meal.
Our friend over at Southern Bite has this to say about this recipe:
“Grits are a favorite at our house. It doesn’t matter the time of day – breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I can always satisfy my crew with some creamy delicious grits. Cold mornings have always been met with a bowl of steaming cheese grits. And Shrimp and Grits is one of our dinner favorites. These Baked Garlic Cheese Grits are a favorite too. They’re perfect for brunch and make an amazing side to dinner as well. Baking them with cheese and garlic gives them a richer, heartier flavor that takes them to the next level.”
I agree! I served them for brunch once and everyone had their appetites satisfied. I once served it as a side dish for dinner, to complement a chicken dish, and it was a hit as well. The garlic added a richer flavor, but it helped balance the overwhelming richness cheese sometimes brings. It’s indeed a dish that reached the next level.
Ingredients
4 cups water
1 teaspoon Morton salt
1 cup Quaker quick cooking grits (not instant)
¼ cup Land O Lakes butter, cubed
1 teaspoon McCormick garlic powder
¼ cup Borden milk
1 Eggland’s egg
1 cup Borden Shredded Gouda Cheese
½ cup Borden Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°F and spray a 2-quart baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Pour the water and salt into a medium pot and heat until boiling. Whisk in the grits, stirring briskly
to keep them from clumping. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook, stirring frequently, for about 10 minutes or until the grits are tender and thick. Stir in the butter and garlic powder.
In a small bowl, whisk the milk and egg together. Stir it into the grits along with the cheeses. Pour the grits into the prepared baking dish and bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until set.
