Grandma cooked really good Salisbury steak. But because she lived a bit too far from us, I had to settle on the next best thing—the diner’s. Their recipes tasted quite similar, except that nothing could really compare to Grandma’s homemade burger and mashed potatoes.
Our friends from Taste of Home has this to say about this recipe:
“Served with mashed potatoes and gravy, there’s nothing that says comfort food and home cooking like a delicious Salisbury steak recipe. Coming from Tina at Mommy’s Kitchen, Old Fashioned Salisbury Steak is just like the kind Ma used to make. The meat is drenched in a French onion soup/brown gravy mixture, which is delicious. Gather the family around the table and enjoy a tasty, home-cooked meal this week.”
This recipe turned out so well with the reduced fat ingredients that my husband had no idea I had tweaked it! He was going on and on about how “a good old juicy steak” beats the modern dishes anytime – you should have seen the look on his face when I explained I only used lean and low fat ingredients!
Ingredients
2 pounds Tyson lean ground beef
1 package of Lipton’s French Onion Soup Mix
1/2 cup Keebler multi-grain cracker crumbs
1 Eggland’s egg
2 (.75-ounces each) packets of McCormick 30% less sodium brown gravy mix
1 cup Daisy light sour cream (50% less fat)
1 can mushroom stems (optional)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Make hamburger patties using ground beef, bread or cracker crumbs, egg and soup mix. Fry or grill until patties are browned on both sides.
While the hamburgers are cooking; in a bowl mix together the dry gravy mix, water, as needed on the back of gravy instructions, and sour cream. Mix to combine. Spray a 9 x 13 pan with nonstick spray and lay cooked patties in the pan.
Cover the patties with the sour cream and gravy mixture. Bake at covered for 30 to 40 minutes, turning patties halfway through.

Healthier meal? I wonder what the sodium is with all the prepared mixes in this recipe? Finally a recipe without cream of mushroom soup, but then canned mushrooms.
