This cake is so easy to make and it’s not to unhealthy for you either!

Wow! I can’t believe the holidays are almost over. As I type this we have less than 48 hours of 2016. Where has the time gone? I think the time has disappeared into the vortex of unhealthy holiday eating haha! I put on the big Christmas dinner this year and I made probably 50,000 calories worth of food or more. From casseroles to desserts we had it all. Then, my family and I eat off the leftovers for the next week. I think I probably gained 5 pounds. I don’t know for certain because I’m too afraid to step on that thing in my bathroom I call “the scale.”

So, as we sit here on the cusp of 2017, I am brainstorming for healthy recipes to make for my family so that we can get back on the wholesome eating train. And guess what? This even includes desserts like this 2-ingredient cinnamon apple cake!

You guys and gals are really going to love this recipe. It’s satisfying, delicious, and very easy to make. Plus, it won’t expand your waistline if eaten in moderation. Enjoy!

There are all kinds out there……mean, rude, inconsiderate and those that just don’t think what comes out of their mouth…. And sometimes there are more than one of them reading a blog. Oh well, I can’t do anything about it. BUT I don’t know that I would EVER start a recipe blog. 🙂

          • Debbie August 19, 2017 at 5:36 am

Ummm…I think you guys are rude. She meant that some people can’t find the recipe ingredients. She was trying to be helpful. Sadly, now she and others will think twice before offering their help.Maybe you should think from a positive view, before jumping all over someone. THAT’S exactly whats wrong today. Everyone looks for the worst in everything.

          Why was this rude?

          • Why Can't Johnny Read Simple Sentence October 27, 2017 at 1:35 am

People think, apparently, that if you tell them the answer is obvious, then WAH WAH, you’re rude. It was direct, but then, they couldn’t understand the directions, so . . . I’m just saying.

Wellllll….It kind of insinuated some of us are illiterate….Kind of rude but kind of funny!!! Sometimes I read but it does not sink in fast enough. We should not purposely say rude things though.

          • Why Can't Johnny Read Simple Sentence October 27, 2017 at 1:41 am

It actually insinuated that the person had poor reading comprehension skills and poor google skills, to find out how Comstock sells their dang can of apple crap. And, LO! That’s the truth.

        • Why Can't Johnny Read Simple Sentence October 27, 2017 at 1:31 am Reply

It was simply straightforward, not rude. Rude would have been to laugh out loud and call for the Darwin award. Apparently no one who comes here takes the time to read the stupid recipe before asking questions. Until people can read and solve simple problems for themselves, there is no hope for this nation. Comstock apple pie filling only comes in one size, unless you are buying industrial. And, by the way, this is one really gross recipe.

And anybody who would eat this terrible recipe, well, you ought to be offended by IT. Oh ye of tissue paper nanny boo boo feelings. If you can’t take being told to read the directions and then, dang, GOOGLE COMSTOCK APPLE PIE FILLING, as specified, you probably don’t need to be trusted with a hot oven after all.

In my opinion, instead of saying “bake until the top browns”, the recipe should say “Cake is done when the top is golden brown and cracked. It should look very dry and be firm to the touch. Don’t underbake.” Also, I had to bake mine for 35 minutes.

But you can’t expect people to google something for themselves and THINK and actually solve a problem. Because that’s too taxing, and then they cry.

    • Sue Bennison August 21, 2017 at 4:01 pm Reply

Always smart to make a recipe as it reads the 1st time then you can decide how you would change it. Most pie filling comes in the 21 oz. But you can get the larger ones also. Next time I make it, I’ll use the larger can to get more apples. But it really doesn’t need it. Don’t be put off by everyone. Be brave and give it a try. By the way if at 30 mins. it’s still jiggly, put in for 10 more and it will be fine. It stinks so don’t think you’very done something wrong. Good luck !

    • Sue Bennison August 21, 2017 at 4:05 pm Reply

21 oz to begin with. After making it the first time you can decide if you would want more. I sprinkled cinnamon and sugar on top for more flavor.

It would be nice to see a clip showing how you mix the apples and the cake mix. Is any special technique involved?

Is it recommended to fold the ingredients together until the cake mix is moist yet take care not to over mix? Do you sprinkle on cinnamon before baking? Can you sprinkle nuts on top, or might they burn.

Pie fillings come in 21 oz. cans regardless of whether it is Comstock, Lucky Leaf, Duncan Hines, etc. Every recipe I have seen like this calls for 1 – 21 ounce can of fruit filling. As far as cinnamon goes, there is some in the apple pie filling but you could always add 1/2 to 1 tsp to your dry cake mix before stirring in the pie filling.

I tried it with Comstock cherry pie filling. After 20 minutes, it was golden brown on top, but “jiggled” in the middle when I went to take it out of the oven and looked wet. I cooked for another 5 minutes and it still jiggled in the middle and looked wet but I went ahead and took it out of the oven, thinking maybe it would finish cooking as it rested. When I tested a piece a couple of hours later, it was cooked around the edges, but was a gooey mess in the middle. Is it supposed to be like this? If it’s not supposed to be like this, any idea what went wrong?
I ate a piece anyway, and as a person with a huge sweet tooth, I found this to be way sweet.

    • Kamiko May 25, 2017 at 4:52 pm Reply

it is for people with a sweet tooth. sometimes if you are above or below sea level, even the make of your oven, or a different pan than they used can make a difference. sometimes lowering the heat, and letting it cook a little longer can make a difference. next time put the filling on the bottom, and the dry cake mix on the top, with a bit of brown sugar or butter pats on top. the brown sugar makes a caramel taste on top, and the butter adds moisture. cake is yummy with butter in it!

    • CorningNY July 27, 2017 at 12:02 am Reply

Did you use an angel food cake mix or a regular cake mix? I would think the regular mix would make it too sweet.

  20. Maria May 9, 2017 at 1:32 pm Reply

I made this last night….just combined the angel food cake mix and 21 oz can of apple pie filling until well mixed and poured it into a 13 x 9 baking dish. Baked it for 25 minutes and tried a piece after it cooled. It was good, definitely sweet and had a cake-like brownie texture. I didn’t add any extra cinnamon, just used the two required ingredients. Not bad for someone who needs a sweet treat while trying to lose some weight.

I also just recently made this angel food cake mix into a cake, using fresh strawberries, sliced with just a hint of sugar, layered in the bottom of a 9×13″ pan. I then stirred the angel food cake mix with a can of pineapple, juice and all. Added chopped walnuts and put it on top of the strawberries. It was delicious. quick and easy.

Amazing how many folks cannot read or grasp the recipe instructions – 2 ingredients (dry cake mix & a can of pie filling)!! Recipes are guides, making a recipe your own by subbing like ingredients for like ingredients usually works, only chgs the taste/flavor – such as changing the cake mix flavor and/or the pie filling flavor. Adding cinnamon or nuts before baking or frosting or dusting powdered sugar after baking is preference, options. If not too complicated for some, try spice cake mix or devil’s food *dry mix* with a 15 oz can of solid pack pumpkin – nothing else, mix with your electric mixer or by hand, bake in any pan you want (I use my bundt or tube pan) and yes, I could add extra cinnamon to the spice version and/or nuts to either, and bake until done. Frost or glaze or dust with powdered sugar or not – optional. Also, boxed brownie mix with a can of pumpkin – solid pack pumpkin, 2 ingredients. Maybe I have just stumbled upon posts by inexperienced bakers. It doesn’t get any more simple, and yes…use some imagination by subbing ingredient flavors to your taste. Easy! Btw – not sure the post who said this didnt cook in center unless she mixed the cake batter and added pie filling or the post that said it tasted eggy.

Still jiggle you so back in for10 more. Perfect. Be prepared as it does go flat and pulls from the sides. But still yummy. Oh yeah, sprinkled cinnamon and sugar on top to bake.

This is also known as a dump cake. The only difference is that you mix this. With a dump cake, you literally just dump the cake mix and pie filling or just a can of peaches into a pan without stirring and bake. I’ve also had the dump cake with pecans. I think this apple cinnamon would be delicious with nuts but than it would 3 ingredients but who cares? It will be really good.

    • lona June 12, 2017 at 9:44 pm Reply

Now our dump cake was called that because like you said we just dumped it in pan. Ours was not low fat but it sure was good. We dumped can of cherry pie filling, can of crushed pineapple and box of regular cake mix (dry) that was sprinkled over top and whole stick of butter sliced into pats all over mixture. to make it even more fattening and yummy, chopped pecans also dumped all over mixture. unlike the angel food and crushed pineapple cake that was great for diets because there was no fat, this actual dump cake was fattening but delicious lol

  26. lona June 12, 2017 at 9:39 pm Reply

this reminds me of no fat cake recipe we passed around years ago when dieting. same thing only angel food cake mix and can of crushed pineapple. mix and bake and it was delicious

    • Janette July 27, 2017 at 3:32 am Reply

As one poster asked another with you same result: Did you *just* use the dry cake mix and the can of pie filling, as instructed, OR did you prepare the cake mix according to the instructions on the cake mix box, and then add the canned pie filling? Should have only used the dry cake mix and the can of pie filling.

Thanks for all comments and suggestions. I will try using the apple-pie filling, soon. The easiest and best, using angel food mix: (do not follow the back of the box even if tempted – you will ruin your cake)
In a bowl, mix your angel food cake, crushed pineapple (20 OZ can) (add coconut,if you like). You cannot miss. Delish.

I believe this recipe and similar may have been given at Weight Watchers. That’s where I got my recipe. You must make sure the angle food cake is a One-step mix. You can start with that and add………..l 0about 10 oz) crushed pineapple. Cake mix + peach pie filling or lemon pie filling.
Another idea is to use a regular cake mix, like a spice cake mix. Add one can of pumpkin, or one can of apple pie filling. I add a bit of water if it’s to thick. Just the cake mix and fruit.

  48. Ann Rast August 21, 2017 at 8:54 pm Reply

My mother never used to measure anything when she cooked and it always turned out great. However, I want to know EXACTLY the right measurements when cooking. As so often happens these days, cans of anything are getting smaller but the prices remain the same. So having an exact ounce amount or some measurement is always a good thing to do. I have noticed that Comstock cherry pie filling has very few cherries in it compared to what they used to have. You can get an “upgraded” can (I don’t recall the term they use), for a lot more money. Next time you get a can of the cherry pie filling, it might be interesting to get one of each and actually count the cherries in each. It was so bad one time that I called the company to complain and they sent me a couple of coupons for free cans of pie filling. The problem was that the “upgraded” version was not in stock that time of year and the coupons ran out before they were restocked.

  49. LYNN August 24, 2017 at 8:29 pm Reply

I am Canadian and, to my knowledge, we don’t have the brand of pie filling in your recipe, therefore, I don’t think that asking the size is unreasonable. Some people are just ignorant of anyone or anything outside of their own small world (mind) and for that they are to be pitied.

Sometimes if you are used to doing something (ie cooking/baking) You think others who don’t do your thing much or ever should know what you are talking about. Perhaps more instruction is needed for those who are not familiar with the kitchen.
    Ingredients
1 – 21oz can of (any brand) apple pie filling
1 – box (any brand) angel food cake mix (NOT PREPARED)

    Instructions
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Mix the apple pie filling and the dry angel food cake mix together
Pour into a greased 9×13 pan
Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until the top is golden brown

I haven’t made this recipe yet, just found it today. I actually can’t decide if it’s really good or really bad from the comments. From experience, I would say make it exactly according to directions without any alterations. It’s very simple, maybe that’s what throws people. It’s not a dump cake because as someone mentioned you dump everything in the pan and do not stir them together with a dump cake. In this cake you stir the two ingredients together and this is important, be sure to use the pan size called for(9×13). The only change might be to cook it a little longer if it needs it(about 10 Minutes). Most pie filling comes in standard sizes so it would be close to the Comstock brand. I always buy the store brand(Kroger) because it’s cheaper and has more fruit. I’m not an expert at all but I’m 69 and have been baking for quite a while. Just be patient and it should be fine.
