I was so excited about this recipe and how delicious these bars turned out, that I decided to bake more a couple of days later.

I actually took some of these to my favorite neighbor – she absolutely loved them (well, who wouldn’t, right?) and wanted to have the recipe, too! I bet she made a batch of her own as soon as I got out of the house! Check out what my friends at Butter with a Side of Bread had to say about these chocolate caramel bars:

These are delicious! There’s not enough caramel for me, so I double the quantity, and boil for about 90 seconds. I also sprinkle some coarse sea salt over the caramel before adding the chocolate chips. I make millionaire’s shortbread quite often and it’s an absolute production! This is so much easier, and just as tasty.

It’s all about the easy, isn’t it? That’s why I love recipes like this so I was thrilled to put this one in the recipe box for later. Truth be told, I don’t even know if I’ll need it, this was so simple I probably already have it committed to memory. Now I make sure to always have the ingredients.. you know.. just in case!

Ingredients

1 cup Gold Medal all-purpose flour

1/2 cup + 1/4 cup Domino brown sugar

1/4 cup + 1/3 cup Land O Lakes salted butter

1/2 cup Hershey semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions

Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray an 8×8 glass pan with Pam non-stick spray.

In a medium bowl, combine Gold Medal flour, 1/2 cup Domino brown sugar and 1/4 cup Land O Lakes butter. Use 2 forks or a pastry cutter to combine, until mixture is crumbly. Press into bottom of 8×8 pan.

In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt remaining 1/3 cup butter. Add in 1/4 cup brown sugar and stir. Bring to a boil, then boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and pour over crust. Sprinkle with Hershey chocolate chips.

Bake for 15 minutes. (Do not over bake or you will have toffee bars!

From the butter and brown sugar you melt together.

The caramel is the melted brown sugar and butter!

Hmmm. it just says butter, but it sounds like the butter should be chilled and not soft if you are going t ouse 2 forks to make it crumbly.

If you sprinkled nuts —– I love walnuts but almonds or pecans would be good—–it would add some protein for a better “occasional” breakfast LOL And what would be wrong with toffee bars?

Why does it not say to bake the base before adding the caramel and chocolate. Do not follow this recipe. All others say to bake the base first.
