I tolerate nightmares as long as they don’t involve me abandoning the juiciest sausage or the most aromatic pasta. I am a food lover, and having to leave that scrumptious piece of dish just because a mad man is chasing after me is unforgivable. So far though, even with all my weird dreams, there was never a time that I dreamed of such a horrifying event. Dad isn’t so lucky. When I went to visit them a week ago, Mom told me this hilarious story about Dad not wanting to eat potatoes and broccoli for a month because of his dream. Since Dad wasn’t at home when I arrived, I was able to hear the full story without his protest.

Mom said Dad woke up one night and immediately went to the kitchen to drink a glass of water. Worried, Mom went after him only to find him blushing when asked what was wrong. The dream was about him eating potato wedges and steamed broccoli. Soon, the potato wedges were chasing him with knives in their hands. He saw an opening to escape, but he was blocked by giant broccoli florets. Dad woke up before he was turned into a dinner dish. I was laughing so hard that I couldn’t keep a straight face in front of him when he arrived. Mom cooked potatoes with broccoli for dinner that night just to tease him further. While I enjoyed the simple but delicious meal, I enjoyed even more watching Dad’s attempt to give us a silent treatment.

Sometimes all you have to do to make someone feel better is to give him or her a warm smile. And maybe a slice of pie too just for the heck of it. When we were kids, whenever Mom noticed that we were feeling down, she would always bake a pie for us. Sometimes, it was a meat pie, but most of the time, it was a fruit pie. She said that pies made things a whole lot better at times. Then she would smile and give us both a kiss on the forehead.

Whenever my brother feels lonely and tired, it’s so obvious. It isn’t just the bags under his eyes, it’s also in the way his shoulder hunches and the way he smiles at people. However lately, he has seemed much happier and more energetic. And I know why. I always witness it whenever I visit them. When he comes home, his wife and his daughter always come running towards him to greet him. His wife will cook his favorite meat pie even when she too is tired from work while the little princess takes care of the gestures of care. My niece always gives her father the brightest smile, the strongest embrace, and the sweetest kiss. I can instantly see how these gestures brighten up his day.

When my brother and I were still kids, our parents always brought us to our favorite fast food restaurants at least once a month. This was their way of indulging us and controlling our fast food intake at the same time. They both believed that if they deprived us of it, it would backfire. So, at least once a month, we got to enjoy those juicy burgers and yummy fries. In between our visits Mom used to indulge us at home by cooking a homemade, healthier version of our favorite fast food treats. My favorite has to be her burger and fries casserole, which was mostly composed of ground beef, lots of cheese, and fun-shaped potatoes.

This burger and fries recipe that I discovered over at Betty Crocker gives these fast food treats another make over. This time, it’s in the form of a pot pie. I think it’s a genius recipe! Even my niece and nephews will enjoy this. They can be granted this pie at least once a month. I am pretty sure that once those kids have a taste, they will never ever look at homemade pies the same way again. It can also be a way of reducing those trip to the fast food restaurants!
