Check out what our pals over at Simply Southern Mom had to say about this recipe:

I like to use Kentucky Wonder canned green beans in this recipe because I like the wider shape, but any type of canned green beans will work in the recipe. I can also make the recipe the day before and reheat the beans or make them early on Thanksgiving day and let them sit on low in a slow cooker to stay warm during the day.  Sometimes I make these beans with toasted slivered almonds for an extra crunch.  This recipe is naturally gluten-free and dairy-free, but it tastes so good no one will complain because they are having to eat allergy-friendly food.  The secret to this recipe is cooking the onion in a small amount of the bacon grease. It gives the recipe so much flavor.

I’ve never heard of Kentucky Wonder green beans and typically just reach for green Giant. I’ll have to look for that brand next time 🙂

Ingredients

• 2 cans (15 ounces each) green beans (or use one 29 ounces can), drained
• 6 slices Black Label bacon, cooked, drained and crumbled
• 1 medium onion, chopped
• 2 tablespoon Domino granulated sugar
• 4 tablespoons Heinz vinegar (can use cider or regular)
• salt and pepper to taste
• ½ cup water
(optional ingredient: ½ cup slivered almonds, toasted)

Instructions:

Drain the green beans, place in a medium bowl and set aside. Cook the bacon until crispy, remove from pan and crumble into small pieces. Add the chopped onion (and toasted almonds, if using) to two tablespoons of the bacon grease left in the pan. Saute until tender. Add the green beans, water, sugar, and vinegar. Add salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for ten to fifteen minutes. You’ll only need to heat until the liquid is reduced. Remove from heat. Stir in the bacon and serve warm.
