Did I ever tell you about my granny’s famous cake recipe? Welp, settle in folks because you’re about to hear it.

My granny was an avid baker. In fact, she was just an all-around excellent cook. I don’t ever remember a time when I was at my grandma’s house that she didn’t have something sweet or savory in the oven. One of my fondest memories of grandma was her teaching me how to make granny cake.

If you haven’t experienced the glory of this cake yet, well, by golly, you are missing out! Granny cake is ooey, gooey, and just plain old delicious. I like this recipe for more reasons than one but the main would be that it is very easy to make.

My Grandma was a school teacher, and perhaps the nicest person on the planet.

That’s what I think anyways. Others probably have their own nicest Grandma in the world award given away to someone else, and that’s okay. This is about my Granny though. Every summer, we would spend tons of time at her house. Mainly because she didn’t have to work I think, and my parents still did. We were off of learning at school, and she was taking a break from teaching. She would always have plenty for us to do though. I think it was the teacher in her that kept us busy. She lived on a huge property out in the country, so she would have us do anything from mowing the lawn to catching bugs to check out.

It all really depended on what she needed help with. If it was nothing that day, we would really have some fun. Once in a while, on those rainy days when we couldn’t get outside, she would take us in the kitchen and teach us how to make all kinds of different things.

One of my most favorite things to create with her was her butter pecan sundae topping. Oh man was that stuff good. It was fun to make, and even more, fun to eat.

Argo cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, Bertolli extra-virgin olive oil, black pepper, Blue Diamond pecans, Bob's Red Mill, caramel apple crumb pie, caramel sauce, cinnamon, Clabber Girl, dessert, domino sugar, eat, Eggland's Best eggs, food, Gold Medal flour, Johnsonville, kosher salt, Kraft, land o lakes butter, lemon juice, light brown sugar, McCormick spices, Morton salt, old-fashioned, Quaker rolled oats, recipe, TruMoo milk, Wesson vegetable oil

I remember as a little girl, getting off the school bus every Wednesday at grandma’s house. She’d always have my favorite pie baking for me; apple crumb. Oh, how I adored those pies. Flaky butter crust, crisp apples with a gooey sauce, and a sugary sweet crumb topping. So good!

When I came across this recipe, I was hesitant to make it because I didn’t want to fix something that wasn’t broken. Grandma’s recipe had been working for all of these years, and there really wasn’t anything to change. So, I didn’t change anything. However, I added something to the recipe: caramel. Wow! What a delightful kick this one little ingredient gave to this already amazing pie!

Quick Tip: You can always tent the pie with aluminum foil if you notice the top browning too quickly. That’s what grandma always did!
