Ham salad spread has been shaping my family for years and now it will shape yours.

I can remember the good old days before electronics. can you? There was once a time when families sat down together for a meal without scrolling through Facebook on a cell phone. I can distinctly recall having a corded telephone on the wall and by golly, that thing better not ring, while we were having dinner or my parents, would be so mad!

My mother would make this delicious ham salad spread on Sunday afternoons and it was an amazing time of just sitting around the table and chatting. She shared this tradition with my husband before we were married. I think she wanted to get his take on quality family time. He loved the idea!

The kids in my daughter’s eighth-grade class were planning a trip to go to Washington D.C.

It was a great idea I thought, so informational and educational for everyone. The only issue that I had was it was going to be pretty costly. I suggested at the parent involvement meeting that they do some sort of fundraising in order to cover some of the costs. All the other parents were on board for that. An idea was brought up for a dinner.

There was a shout out for spaghetti, but they already had one of those for the basketball team. I said, “What about a traditional meat and potatoes style? We are sure to bring in a crowd then.” We voted and ham won the main entree. We wanted to do something that was more than just the plain meat, and it was brought up to glaze with honey and cinnamon.

It was a homemade glaze so it wouldn’t cost a lot, and we could do tons of ham for a very low price. It was just like this recipe from Facebook. The ham dinner was really easy to make and it went over really well among the community members. The kids made a big portion of the funds they needed to head out for their trip that spring too!

Growing up, at least two or three nights a week my mom would prepare us mac and cheese.

What I am talking about is the Kraft kind with the powder cheese.  We absolutely loved it and devoured it.  We would eat the family size box between two or three of us.  We would slice bananas over the top and were good to go (it is a Cuban thing, really).

After a long time of enjoying boxed mac and cheese, my sisters and I knew we wanted to try something new.  We wanted to actually cook the pasta and grate the cheese ourselves.  Not necessarily because we wanted it to be natural, but because we wanted it to be ooey and gooey like all homemade mac and cheese dishes look.

We found a basic recipe for it that we enjoy and now what we do is tweak it every time we make it to accommodate new and more exciting ingredients.  This recipe, for example, adds bacon and broccoli and boy is it good.  Knowing my husband, he would add corn too, but shhh, let’s pretend we do not have any left in the pantry.  This dish is simply perfect just as it is!

For Decades, This Has Been The Best Method! Have You Tried It Yet?

When the weather is getting colder, I bring out my secret stash of soup recipes! Actually, it’s not really “secret” – but I rarely make soups during the summer so when I go back to my soup recipe box again, it’s like finding a hidden treasure, haha! This ham and potato soup recipe has been my number one favorite for a long time, and there’s a reason for it!

There is one very important ingredient in this recipe, and I believe it’s the thing that sets this soup apart from others. I’m pretty sure my great-grandparents were making soup this way – too bad I don’t have a time machine so that I could go back and see it! What I do know is that this cooking method will make almost any ingredients taste heavenly, and you don’t need any kind of special seasonings for this.

All you need is a little bit of extra time – or if you’d like, you could do as I do and make this ahead so you have everything prepared when you’re ready to make this soup.

What I’m going to show you today is one of the yummiest soups I have ever made in my whole life! Trust me; I’ve tried quite a bunch of them, so I know what I’m talking about. At this time of year I basically just ditch all the salads and grilled meals and go for steaming hot bowls of happiness. And they sure make me happy!

With a few little tweaks you can make it taste brand new every time! Add a little bit of tomato paste, or use sausage instead of ham and no-one in your family will even realize you’ve been using the same recipe all along! Serve with homemade biscuits or dinner rolls and you’ll get a hearty meal your whole family loves.
