There’s Nothing Like Homemade Cake – And We’ve Got 6 Of Them

When it comes to dessert, I’ll take a big slice of cake over ice cream or ambrosia salad, anytime! Nothing wrong with creamy desserts; I just happen to think a delicious cake is a wonderful way to end a meal. I am a big fan of vintage recipes, so I decided to ask my mother for her favorite old-fashioned cakes. She has a collection of so many great recipes, that even a so-so baker like me will learn how to make cake for any occasion!

Originally she brought me 20 cake recipes (yes, twenty!) but I thought I’d start with a little less than that… I mean, making 20 delicious cakes in a row would mean I would have to buy a pair of new jeans, haha! But I truly think these awesome cakes are worth a few extra calories.

Mom said she had found some of these in grandma’s handwritten cookbook, and I do remember how she always served different kinds of delicious cakes when I visited her as a little girl. I hope some day my future grandchildren will think of me when they enjoy these cakes!

Who Would Have Thought Your Crock Pot Can Do THIS!

When I got my first slow cooker I somehow got the idea it would be great for making soups and stews, and that’s about it. It kind of makes me laugh now; I had no idea of all the wonders I would be able to create in my crock pot! For example, I didn’t think it would be possible to make any kind of dessert in this wonder machine. Over the years I’ve learned I was so wrong!

The first time I tried making a slow cooker dessert, it was some kind of a crumble. Peach, if I remember correctly, and it turned out so delicious I could have eaten the whole thing on my own. (To be honest with you, I probably ate half of it before I even served it to my family…)

Since then I’ve gathered quite an impressive collection of crock pot dessert recipes, and this classic cheesecake is one of my favorites. I make this whenever I’m expecting company and so far everyone has absolutely loved it. I like to serve this with fresh berries and a cup of dark roast coffee.

In the past, I have shared about my family feud with cheesecake.  My aunt for many years claimed to have made the best cheesecake, and then my cousin also said that she was the one who made the best one.  Thanksgiving would come around and it was a constant battle of who made the better cheesecake this year.  I usually refrained from participating because I did not want to bring just any other cheesecake into the mix.  I would wait until I had the perfect recipe.

I think I have found that recipe.  Normally, cheesecakes are made in a spring form pan where after you bake the cheesecake, you put it in the freezer to harden.  Once it is frozen, you pop open the spring form and then slide out your perfect cheesecake.  It is a pretty cool technique and I have never heard of any other way to make cheesecake! Now I have though.  There is a way to make cheesecake in the crock pot.  Is that not just crazy?  I think it is so ironic that you can make something that needs to be baked so perfectly in a big thing like a crock pot.  But folks, I have got to tell you, it turns out wonderfully!
