baking powder, baking soda, Bertolli extra-virgin olive oil, black pepper, Bob's Red Mill, Clabber Girl, College Inn chicken broth, Daisy sour cream, domino sugar, eat, Eggland's Best eggs, food, funeral potatoes, Gold Medal flour, Johnsonville, kettle-cooked potato chips, kosher salt, Kraft, land o lakes butter, McCormick spices, Montery Jack cheese, Morton salt, oinion, Ore-Ida hash browns, Pam Cooking Spray, parmesan, recipe, sharp cheddar, TruMoo milk, Wesson vegetable oil

You might be turning your nose up at the name of these potatoes, but we assure you, you’re going to love them! This awesome dish got its name from being a staple casserole served at Mormon funeral gatherings. However, these potatoes are definitely the life of the party.

I’ll admit, I make them for a variety of occasions, not just funerals, and you should too! What makes them, so savory is the creamy ingredients that coat them such as cheese, chicken broth, and butter. And guess what? They are topped with crunchy kettle-cooked potato chips! My whole family loves it when I make this side dish, but we prefer to call it “Party Potatoes.”

If I could go back in time and marry my husband again, I might even serve these at the reception! And I bet everyone would love them!

Quick Tip: You don’t have to use potato chips as the topping if you don’t want to. Substitute with french fried onions, cornflakes, or crushed crackers.

How about the nutritional info. Some of us count that.

Really!? You can’t read the ingredients list and already tell that it’s something someone who “counts on nutritional info” is going to turn their nose up at?!

I make something similar to this but my recipe is butter frozen hashbrowns potatoes onions 16 ounces of sour cream one can of cream of mushroom soup salt-and-pepper and a cheese of your choice mix it all together and top it with the potato chips oh so good . I sometimes use fresh potatoes if I have a lot I will hash brown them and par cook him then follow the recipe

Sounds great but not on my diet! 🙁

For those of us who crave savory and not sweets, this is our treat. Not intended as a staple of your diet. Get real people.

It amazes me when a yummy recipe, which is obviously not for people on diets or concerned about the nutritional value are the ones who instead of ignoring the recipe choose to make folks who enjoy food feel guilty.

feel guilt ?…you do to yourself…your brain is trained nobody forces you to feel that way …change your thinking

I would make something like this for a potluck. That way it is enjoyed by many and I could try it too without worrying about my diet. All things in moderation.

I add a bunch of cut up boiled chicken breasts before mixing and have a great casserole!

A HEART ATTACK ON A PLATE, NO WONDER THEY CALL IT FUNERAL POTATOES.

They look delicious….not heart healthy, but darn….sometimes we need some comfort food. I love potatoes and have many different recipes….these have a lot of ingredients in them and might take a while to put together.

I do wish they wouldn’t call food things like ‘funeral. or trash, ect….. ugh…to me, anyway…No like the name…… Whta’s in a name?

I made these for a funeral just last week and was asked for the recipe 😀

    • W Geldart October 28, 2017 at 1:18 am Reply

Shannon i’d appreciate it if you would send me the recipe for theses potatoes

  13. Cheryl Wilson October 18, 2017 at 3:56 pm Reply

I agree with Arline Aguilar. This version has way too many unnecessary ingrediants. I have a much simpler version of this recipe and every one loves it.

In other parts of the country they’re called widow maker baker potatoe casserole. ??

Take it from a Mormon who’s been making funeral potatoes for years, this is NOT the true recipe . For starters, it doesn’t have pepper or flour or Parmesan cheese in it.

Take it a from a Mennonite who’s been making Funeral Potatoes for years…this is how we make them 🙂 I’m sure there are different variations of the recipe, Bev.
