My Dad was turning 80 years old and we were going to be having a great big party for him.
We had to take some time and celebrate this man that had done so much to help us out over the years. He was still up and very active and ready to party. We couldn’t keep it a surprise, just because there was no way that we could ever keep anything from him. So, I decided to just ask him what kind of cake he wanted me to order for him. He said, “I want you to make me one of yours from your own kitchen!” Well, okay then. I’ve always been pretty good at baking, but I didn’t realize that he liked it that much.
If that’s what he wanted though, that’s what I was going to do for him. I knew he loved strawberries, and they were in season, so that’s the direction I headed in.
I found this recipe on the web and it looked absolutely perfect for the occasion. My dad saw it when I brought it out loaded with candles and he got a great big smile on his face. That smile made it all worth the extra work I had to put in.
